How to get your business named in ChatGPT answers
Short answer: ChatGPT names a business when it can read the business's facts on the open web and finds the same facts repeated on independent pages. Your website is one input; citations elsewhere are the other. Nothing on your site controls the model's output, so the work is to become the easiest business to quote.
1. Let the AI crawlers read the site
Check yourdomain.com/robots.txt. If GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot or
Google-Extended are blocked or missing, the assistants only know your business from second-hand data —
which is usually a directory listing with an old phone number. Allow them, and publish a sitemap.
2. Publish the facts in plain text: llms.txt
An llms.txt file at the domain root states, in plain sentences, what the business does,
who it serves, the service area, the price band, the hours and the contact route. No marketing adjectives.
This is the fastest way for a model to get an accurate picture instead of guessing from an old homepage.
3. Mark up the entity once
JSON-LD on the homepage (LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService, plus
Service, Offer, FAQPage) gives the model a machine-readable identity:
name, area served, services, price range, sameAs links. Every value must match the visible text — a schema
that contradicts the page is worse than no schema.
4. Build answer-shaped pages
Assistants quote sentences that already answer the question. So write the question as an H2 and answer it in the first two sentences, with the number, the city and the qualification included. Ten to twenty-five of these blocks, built on the real questions buyers ask ("best X in Y", "what does X cost in Y", "X open Sunday"), do more than any rewrite of the About page.
5. Earn the corroboration
The same facts must appear on pages you do not own — directories, professional listings, review profiles, comparison and listicle articles, and long-form answers on community sites. When four or five independent pages agree, an assistant treats the fact as reliable and names the business.
What does not work
- Keyword-stuffed pages written for Google's old ranking signals.
- "Award-winning" claims with no source.
- Guaranteed-mention offers. No provider controls model output; anyone promising a #1 mention is selling noise.
How long it takes
Baseline visibility can be measured in three days. Perplexity and Google AI Overviews usually start naming new businesses within two to four weeks; ChatGPT Search typically takes four to eight weeks. Results compound after ninety days.
